Whether your lips are naturally thin or have lost volume over time, there are several cosmetic options available to achieve the soft, pillowy lip look that’s all the rage right now. While implants have been used for lip augmentation for years, non-surgical dermal fillers only became popular in recent years. Trusted facial plastic surgeon Dr. David Magilke offers dermal filler treatment for rejuvenating the lips at his practice. The Portland plastic surgeon believes dermal fillers offer several benefits over lip implants. Read on to learn about the two treatment options.

Lip Augmentation with Implants

Lip implants are made of silicone material, which is compatible with human tissue and designed to enhance the plumpness and volume of the lips. During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation in order to minimize discomfort. The plastic surgeon inserts the implants through tiny incisions inside the corners of the mouth and then close the incisions using sutures. The procedure can take up to two hours to perform. As with any surgical procedure, lip augmentation comes with inherent risks including infection, nerve damage and excessive bleeding.

The biggest difference between lip implants and other lip enhancement options is that lip implants offer a permanent solution. Some patients may see this as a benefit, but what about those patients who are not satisfied with the results? Some patients may find that they wish their new pout was bigger, or in some cases, smaller. Other patients may regret using implants and wish to remove them for a less invasive treatment. Removing the lip implants is difficult and requires undergoing yet another surgical procedure.

Lip Rejuvenation with Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers offer a temporary solution to both thin and aged lips. The injectable treatments work by adding volume to the skin while simultaneously smoothing out wrinkles and creases. Treatment with dermal fillers typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes to administer. During the procedure, a topical anesthetic may be applied to numb the lips. A fine needle is then used to inject the dermal filler. Results are almost immediate and the procedure requires no downtime.

There are several types of dermal fillers that can be used to enhance the lips. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that binds water molecules in the treatment area, increasing volume in the skin. Belotero is another hyaluronic acid filler that is frequently used to treat the bottom lip. Belotero’s thinner, more pliable substance helps make the bottom lip smoother and more natural than implants and other injectable treatments. This injectable can also fill the vertical lines that form around the mouth over time, something that implants cannot do. The result is plumper lips and a younger-looking facial appearance.

Because the results from dermal fillers are temporary (they can last between three and 12 months), multiple treatments are needed to maintain results. If a patient is not satisfied with their initial results, modifications can be made during their second treatment in order to achieve the desired look.

Dr. Magilke offers both Juvederm and Belotero in his Portland office and would be happy to discuss your lip rejuvenation options with you during a one-on-one consultation. To schedule an appointment please call (503) 297-6511 today.
