Do you have visible spider veins on your face that cause you to feel embarrassed or self-conscious? If so, laser vein removal with The Portland Face Doctor, David D. Magilke, can help. Laser vein removal is a non-invasive, highly effective treatment that works on the face, neck, chest and hands. Dr. Magilke uses the VariLite KTP laser, as well as the Lumenis Quantum IPL system and the BBL (Broad Band Light) by Sciton.

More about Laser Vein Removal

Laser vein removal targets spider veins (small clusters of red, blue or purple veins), which are harmless but cosmetically unappealing. It is an excellent alternative to sclerotherapy, the traditional vein treatment, which involves injecting a sclerosing agent into the veins to shrink them so they eventually disappear. Laser therapy is better for smaller, more sensitive areas like the face.

Laser vein removal is performed in our office and typically takes about 30 minutes. Your eyes will be covered with a shield to protect them from the laser.

The VariLite KTP handpiece will be placed over the treatment area and will deliver an intense beam of light at the vein. The heat from the light destroys the vein, causing it to disappear. This might produce a slight stinging sensation, but it will not be painful. This is repeated until all visible veins have been treated.

We recommend a series of three to five sessions for the best results. Spacing the sessions apart at monthly intervals gives the skin time to heal between sessions. You should notice a reduction in the appearance of the veins after each treatment.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins can start showing for patients who are experiencing certain hormonal or weight changes. Women who are pregnant often notice large areas of veins around their skin. Sometimes, in other cases, it can be genetic.

Are You a Candidate for Laser Vein Removal?

Suitable candidates for laser vein removal treatment generally include those who:

  • Are concerned with the appearance and / or physical symptoms of varicose and or spider veins
  • Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
  • Have not been treated for blood clots (Individuals who have had a blood clot in the past will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they are suitable candidates.)

Recovering from Treatment

Laser vein removal does not require significant downtime. You can return to work, exercise and your regular routine when you feel ready. You may have slight bruising, cramping or changes in color in the treatment area, but these side effects are temporary and will quickly subside. It’s important that you protect the treated areas from sun exposure.

We will give you more detailed instructions about medications to aid healing or to reduce infection. We will also advise when to follow up with us, and when to return for your next treatment session.

Results You Can Expect

The exact results of laser vein removal treatment may vary by patient, depending on the extent of the varicose or spider veins. However, most individuals experience long-lasting relief from the pain associated with varicose veins, immediately after recovering from treatment. The majority of patients experience a dramatic improvement in the appearance of varicose or spider veins.
