Botox and dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are great, minimally invasive solutions to wrinkles, fine lines and other signs of facial aging. But although effective, these injectable products are limited in the results they produce. At some point in their lives, many patients begin to consider undergoing a surgical facial rejuvenation procedure like facelift.

In this blog post, Dr. David Magilke of Portland Face Doctor reveals some signs that it might be time to switch from injectables to facelift.

You Are In Your Late 40s, 50s or 60s

Injectables are often thought of as the first line of defense against wrinkles and other signs of aging. For this reason, injectables are typically the treatment of choice for younger patients (those in their late 20s, 30s and early 40s) who are just beginning to see wrinkles and lines surface on the skin. More often than not, the transition from an injectable treatment to a surgical procedure like facelift occurs when a patient reaches their late 40s or early 50s because this is when signs of aging become more prominent.

Keep in mind, however, that everyone ages at a different pace. Depending on various factors, including genetics and lifestyle factors, some patients may benefit from undergoing facelift or another surgical facial rejuvenation procedure before they reach their late 40s.

You Have Excess Skin and Fat

Injectables can treat wrinkles, fine lines and lost facial volume. What they cannot treat is loose, sagging skin and tissue, which often create a sad and older-looking appearance. Surgical facial rejuvenation procedures are the only way to remove and tighten facial skin and tissues for more youthful contours. If you are bothered by excess skin on the middle and lower facial areas (in addition to wrinkles, fine lines and volume loss), facelift may be the best option.

You Desire Longer-Lasting Results

Although injectables offer effective results, they are only temporary. Depending on the specific injectable product, the effects can last a few months up to two years. Repeat treatments are needed to maintain results. On the other hand, facelift produces results that can last for many years. With facelift, you only have to undergo surgery once, and the results are more noticeable.
