Aside from the face, the hands can be one of the first areas on the body to show signs of aging. Over time, the hands begin to look bony and thin, and wrinkles, tendons and veins become accentuated. Unsurprisingly, these unsightly signs of aging become harder to conceal over time.
Fortunately, there is treatment available for people who wish to rejuvenate their hands. Radiesse, a dermal filler commonly used for facial rejuvenation, is the only injectable treatment approved by the FDA to restore volume to thinning hands. In this blog post, trusted facial plastic surgeon Dr. David Magilke answers common questions regarding hand rejuvenation with Radiesse.
What Is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a soft tissue filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite, a naturally-occurring mineral that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. The injectable has traditionally been used to smooth facial wrinkles, creases and folds by plumping the skin from below the surface. Most recently, Radiesse has been cleared by the FDA to add volume to the hands. With Radiesse treatment, hand veins, tendons and wrinkles become less visible and the skin on the hands looks more supple and youthful.
What Is Treatment Like?
Hand rejuvenation treatment with Radiesse is performed as an outpatient procedure and typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Dr. Magilke injects Radiesse under the skin on the back of the hands. The injectable fills in areas where wrinkles have appeared and volume has been lost. Depending on how much volume is needed, Dr. Magilke may inject the dermal filler into multiple locations on the hand.
What Results Can I Expect?
Results from Radiesse are almost immediately visible following treatment. Some patients experience mild swelling after treatment. However, this is only temporary and should subside within a few days. Once fully healed, you can expect to see smoother, younger-looking hands!
How Long Do Results Last?
Results from Radiesse are temporary. Depending on how much filler is used, results may last up to one year. To maintain the results, multiple treatments are recommended.
